What does the new Secretary of Education mean for YOUR child?

Among the drastic appointees of the new administration, Betsy DeVos’s selection for Secretary of Education foreshadows a new era in public education.

The United States public education system was founded on the importance of education for all children and has ebbed and flowed with the tides of the demographics of our nation. Among the most important growth of the US education system is setting standards for equity and equality in education.

Despite much needed growth – and necessary reform, the new administration challenges the fundamental principles of the US public education system. No doubt that there are issues to be addressed within the current system and necessary reform is still required. However, the proposed administration would set necessary reform and growth back substantially.

Betsy DeVos has never attended a public school, nor does she have any experience with public education system. Among fears of dismantling the education system in general, in Betsy DeVos’ own admissions, she REFUSES to commit to the following:

  1. Ensuring excellence in education for all children;
  2. Safeguarding the protections of the IDEA and Section 504;
  3. Combating discrimination in voucher and charter school programs;
  4. Enforcing State compliance with the IDEA and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA); and
  5. Curtailing the overuse of exclusionary disciplinary practices, especially seclusion, restraint.

Not only did Betsy DeVos refuse to commit to these fundamental principles, she was unable to speak to knowledge or expertise in any of the aforementioned areas.

Why is this important for Parents and Students to know and understand? How will it affect you? Betsy DeVos has focused her career, and her campaign for Secretary of Education on principles of an unsuccessful and disastrous voucher system.

This voucher system would break the public education system and replace it with for-profit businesses – profiting big business rather than Students – It would create a conflict between separation of church and state (since her policies attempt to spread right wing religious beliefs throughout the system) – It would create a conflict with FOUNDATIONAL principles of Brown v. Board of Education by allowing separation that is unequivocally unequal. And it would create a conflict with accountability and her so called “system of choice.”

This system of her dreams would eliminate or decrease regulations that ENSURE quality and equality education for ALL students. The United States education system provides FREE and QUALITY public education for ALL students. Dismantling the current system threatens this principle and may leave your child behind.
